The Resource of the Month
Hello Grace Family! It's time for our next Resource of the Month! This month's hand-picked resource is an insightful book called God's Big Picture. |
God's Big Picture
Written by British pastor Vaughan Roberts, God's Big Picture is an introduction to Biblical Theology. "Wait, hold on," one might say. "Isn't all of our theology supposed to be biblical?" Yes, of course it is! See, when we say Biblical Theology, we aren't merely talking about theology that is biblical (though it certainly is!). Rather, we are talking about a specific discipline which studies the theology of the whole Bible as it fits together and speaks to us. Hence the term, Biblical Theology. Another way of putting it would be like this: Biblical Theology explains the overarching message, or the redemptive narrative, of the entire Bible from beginning to end. It explains how all 66 books fit together in harmony to teach us truthfully about God and his plan of salvation. It shows us God's Big Picture. So if you've ever wondered how Christians ought to understand the Covenant with Abraham, or the Law of Moses, or the monarchy in Israel, or the role of the prophets, or the relationship between Israel and the church, or the real point of the End Times, or many other often confusing subjects, then this short book will be a great place to start. This past year, our Community Group enjoyed reading this book together. Many people discovered themes, connections, and prophetic fulfillment which they had never seen before. We all walked away with a better grasp of the big story of the Bible. It is clearly written with a simple framework which traces the theme of the Kingdom of God throughout the Bible. If you pick up this book, I am confident that God's Big Picture will help you integrate and deepen your understanding of God and his Word. |
Final Thought
Have you ever thought about the fact that God didn't have to reveal himself to us? He didn't have to give us his Word. He didn't have to show us his character. He didn't have to send the Son. He didn't have to save us. He didn't have to do anything for us. But he did! And we learn of what he did, and of who he is, and of his plan for us as his people, in his Holy Word. What a precious gift! The Psalmist writes: "Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path." (Psalm 119:105). Spend time this upcoming fall letting that light shine in your mind and heart. Paul writes: "All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work." (2 Tim 3:16–17). Spend time this fall receiving that equipping through the Word. And as you spend time in the Word, consider a resource like God's Big Picture to help you grasp its message.
